Do you really need fog lamps?

Fog Lamps were once an indispensable piece of kit on cars, and if you find yourself browsing variant lists and spec sheets, you will find that only the more expensive models come with these auxiliary lights. Although, are they worth it? Should fog lamps make or break the deal, or should you go for the higher model partly because of the fog lamps?

If you want to learn more, please visit our website.

Let&#;s dissect the matter covering a few points for consideration.

Form

Possibly the most basic and strongest case that can be made for having fog lamps versus not having fog lamps is the looks. When you see a car that only has headlights and has some negative space in the bumper, you might think to yourself that something is missing. There are some cars that are designed without fog lamps, but more often than not, you might even get a few unsightly panels under the headlights or under the taillights that seem like something is missing. Or it could be clean, without any panels or cutouts where there should be a fog lamp. Either way, having a set of fog lamps do give the impression that a car is &#;complete.&#;

Function

While there are people that say that the headlights are enough, that argument is dependent on the car that you are talking about. If, for example, you have a car that only has halogen reflector headlights, then yes, fog lamps would do well to help illuminate the road ahead. Though, another set of halogens with about the same output is no use unless it is pointed in a different direction or has a different output.

Though with modern LED lights, the fog lamps aren&#;t as needed anymore. Take Mazda for example, for its Mazda3 and Mazda6 models, both of them don&#;t have fog lamps. Instead, they have powerful projector LED headlights that cover a wider area in order to eschew the need for fog lamps. Some say that they would rather have fog lamps, but in our testing, the headlights were plenty good enough, if not way better than we were expecting.

So it really depends on the manufacturer and the design of the vehicle if having no foglamps is a good thing or a bad thing. With the advancement of lighting technology on cars, it will be interesting to see fog lamps being taken out of the equation in favor of a cleaner look, provided of course that the headlights are good enough to stand on their own.

So do you need foglamps?

That really depends on your car&#;s headlights. Actually, you should be asking &#;are my headlights good enough?&#; Because foglamps are auxiliary lights, they shouldn&#;t be the main concern. Instead, ask if the car has good enough headlights, to begin with.

Although, as with a lot of things, most lights should be good enough at least to meet regulations, unless you really go through areas without street lights and with precarious twists and turns. We cannot deny that a great lighting system is very empowering during a night drive. Things are different now, however, and more and more cars are coming with more capable lighting systems. Though, more budget-oriented cars that only have halogen headlights are more in need of an extra pair of lights in the front for more coverage.

That being said, the more capable your headlights are, the less you need a set of foglamps to go with them, and we recommend that you at least consider a pair if your car comes with only halogen reflectors or halogen projectors.

LED Fog Light Conversions - Stedi Blog

When upgrading the fog lights on your vehicle, there can be a few contributing factors to the options available to you determining whether you are able to convert to a complete LED Fog light unit or keep the existing housing and upgrade the globe itself to LED. Below you will find LED upgrades for the most popular bull bars, a range of universal fog lights commonly found on factory bumpers, and an offering of LED upgrades for models we don't offer complete kits for.

ARB DELUXE BULL BAR LED FOG LIGHT UPGRADE

The Deluxe Fog Light LED Upgrade Kit is specifically designed to fit the range of ARB Deluxe bull bars. Using a polycarbonate lens and a sharp beam offers a considerable upgrade in performance over the standard fog lights with a sharper beam helping to cut through fog/haze more effectively. We have also added an optional DRL halo that can be wired up to parkers/ignition or alternatively, left aside if the preference is to not use the DRL.

NOTE:

  • This product is not compatible with ARB Deluxe bull bars fitted with the IPF fog lights.

  • Toyota 70 Series LandCruisers / Hilux models with the larger fog lights may require the ARB Summit Fog Light even if the bull bar is the deluxe model. Refer to the imagery below to determine which style is required.

ARB SUMMIT BULL BAR LED FOG LIGHT UPGRADE

The Summit LED Fog Light upgrade was specifically designed to suit the ARB Summit range of bullbars which also makes it compatible with some of Toyotas factory bumpers found on some Hilux and 70 Series LandCruiser models. Our offering is fitted with a polycarbonate lens for durability off-road and optimized LEDs and reflectors helping with visibility through fog/haze. There is also the added DRL which can be wired through the parker/ignition or left aside if there is no desire for using the DRL.

  • Fits the entire range of ARB's Summit Bull Bars

  • Fits Toyota Hilux (N70) from to (Pre-Facelift) with the standard bumper as well Hilux with the older ARB Deluxe Bullbar.

  • Fits Toyota Landcruiser 70 series with the larger fog lights, along with the older ARB Bullbar, and standard front bumper.

  • Fits newer MCC Bull Bars with larger fog light.

HAMER 4X4 BULL BAR FOG LIGHT LED UPGRADE

If you are looking for more details, kindly visit Carri.

Shown below is our Type A Universal LED Fog light fitted on the right side of the fog light housing. As to our knowledge the Type A kit will suit both fog light positions.

IRONMAN 4X4 BULL BAR FOG LIGHT LED UPGRADE

Our offering for the IronMan bull bar provides a greatly improved sharpness in the beam as well as an optional DRL that functions a little differently from other products in our range with DRL. The DRL can be wired up a few different ways with modes that when no headlights are on, the halo illuminates at full brightness but when flicked to low beam, will operate at half brightness.

  • Compatible with both styles of IronMan fog light mounting brackets.

OPPOSITE LOCK BULL BA

R FOG LIGHT LED UPGRADE

A simple solution for Opposite Lock bull bars that have not come with a fitted fog light or had the older halogen offerings. The fog light shroud from Opposite Lock simply needs to be squeezed slightly to break the glue seal and the back piece blocking fog light installation will pop straight out.

NOTE: The below image features our Osram LED Fog Light which, unfortunately, has been discontinued to be replaced with our higher-performing Type A.

  • Our Type A Universal LED Fog Lights are also compatible with some Dobinson bull bars.

RHINO 4X4 BULL BAR FOG LIGHT LED UPGRADE

The Rhino 4x4 bull bars oddly will accept both the universal Type A and C LED fog light upgrades. The difference between the 2 types really comes down to the type of bracket-style on the back but in the case of the Rhino bull bar, either will do.

TJM BULL BAR FOG LIGHT LED UPGRADE

For the T13 bull bar, our Type C Universal LED Fog Light is a complete drop-in replacement. For those who did not opt into the optional fog light kit from TJM or even older kits fitted with the outdated halogen model, this is your perfect upgrade solution.

UNIVERSAL TYPE LED FOG LIGHTS

As seen to be suitable to a range of bull bars throughout this post, our universal LED Fog Light kits are compatible with a vast list of applications including bull bars and most vehicles' factory bumper.

NOTE: As there are 3 different variations in our universal fog kits, click here to view the current list of known compatibility.

FOG LIGHT GLOBE LED UPGRADE

We have a growing range of LED fog light globes available to vehicles that at this point in time, we do not have complete kits available for. There are quite a few variations in these globes with the most common being your traditional H11 & HB4 but included in our range are such globes as PSX24W, P13W, and 881 globes that are commonly found in overseas models.

NOTE: It is best to remove your existing fog light prior to purchasing your LED upgrade as your halogen globes (in most cases) should have a marking on the base or around the collar as to what fitting it is to cross-reference with our range.
