Buying bulk fasteners (nuts, bolts, etc), and Hillman bolt bins

As a 2nd hand consumer calling Hillman, they're not helpful, and have no interest in helping you. So, instead of using dividers, I used 3x5 cups from akro-mils (Part # ). I was able to fit 5 cups in each drawer nicely. Zoro also sells a house brand, which is literally stamped with the same akro-mils part number, and the akro-mils logo on the bottom, for $0.26 cheaper per cup. I just wanted to share this here, for anyone else who is naive enough to think it will be easy to buy dividers for Hillman bins

Second, I spent some time figuring out the best place buy my bolts at. For new projects, I will primarily use SAE coarse thread, but I also wanted to keep some SAE fine thread, and some metric on hand for replacements. My plan is to buy an assortment with a handful of each size, and bulk up on the sizes I know I use a lot, and anything I start going through more regularly. I ended up buying my assortments from "Warren Fastenings South" on ebay. I asked them how many pounds each assortment was to get a sense of the per pound pricing, but they wouldn't give it to me, so I made some educated guesses, and I was pretty close. After they were delivered I weighed everything, and subtracted the weight of the packaging material to figure out what the per pound pricing was.

Here is what I bought:

From the research I did wholesalebolts.com has the best per pound price ($2.53/lb for 50x gr8 1/2-13x3")when buying in bulk, or even sometimes onesies twosies, but they don't have a huge selection. boltdepot.com seems to have the second best pricing ($3.41/lb for 50x gr8 1/2-13x3"), and has a much larger selection. So I'll be bulking up my assortment with purchases from these guys.

For reference, in my area, Tractor supply charges $6.09/lb for bulk grade 8, and $4.99/lb for grade 5.

I hope this helps the next guy save a little time, or money. If anyone knows of any place better than the ones I listed, please post up here. Next I plan on bulking up on smaller button head, and socket head type fasteners.

It's really satisfying having a supply of bolts, it's one of those luxuries that's always been on my bucket list, along with having my own hoist. Both of which I've done lately, so I'm stoked.

First, I recently bought some bulk hardware bins from a regional hardware store that went out of business. I got a great deal, but they didn't have many dividers with them. I figured I could buy dividers from the manufacturer of the bins. Turns out Hillman, the manufacturer of the hardware, gives the bins to the retail stores for free. So, instead of using dividers, I used 3x5 cups from akro-mils (Part # ).
