You are supposed to use a canvas/fabric type cover. This protects it from the elements while not trapping moisture. Mine even has mesh on the sides to ensure it breathes well.

You can get a cover like this at any Home Depot, and I think I have seen them at Walmart too. After you spend $400+ on a quality BBQ it only makes sense to buy a nice $30 cover to protect it, vs. cheaping out on the $10 vinyl

I have never had any problems with insects or animals living under my BBQ cover. If you have that problem you don't BBQ often enough :P
