Best needle size for piecing - Sewing Pattern Review

I was using universal needles on a project with precuts, and they made the most appalling punching sound going through multiple seams--to the point DH asked if there was something wrong with the machine! They were also difficult to use with a tightly-woven batik on another project. I switched to the Schmetz quilting needles when I saw them mentioned on a designer's blog--she uses them for both piecing and quilting--and I decided to give them a try. No scary punching sound, they glide through the fabrics... very pleased. I've been using the 11s. I used them for both piecing, with regular ol' Coats Dual Duty thread, and simple straight-line quilting with Coats cotton quilting thread. I've not experimented beyond those thread types with my quilting yet, so YMMV.

I am *brand new* to this, so listen to everyone above me, first... but I've been using Schmetz Quilting needles (pink package, they come in two sizes, 75/11 and 90/14; there is also a pack with both of those). I really like them. They're a big improvement over the universals (piecing) and topstitching (quilting) needles I was using before.I was using universal needles on a project with precuts, and they made the most appalling punching sound going through multiple seams--to the point DH asked if there was something wrong with the machine! Needle size for machine quilting

I use a 90/14 for just about everything and haven't had any troubles. The only time I use a different needle is when I need a specialty needle, like a jeans or leather needle. I sew with a variety of cotton and polyester threads and don't have problems with any of them, whether piecing or quilting.

It probably depends greatly on your machine. I would imagine that the spacing tolerances vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, and probably even within the same model due to variances in manufacturing and any wear & tear on the machine. Needles don't cost that much - if you're having troubles I'd say pick up a variety pack and try them all out and see what makes your machine happiest!
