Cartridge machines generally use software to tether to computers. For instance, the Cricut, traditionally a cartridge-based machine, also has software called Design Studio, which lets you create your own shapes by welding existing cartridge shapes together. However, Silhouette's software, called Silhouette Studio, works more as a graphics editor such as Photoshop, where you can used saved images and fonts on your computer. You need Windows XP or above for either software, and there is software available for Macs as well as PC. It's a good idea to test out various cutting machines and their cartridges and software before purchasing.
