Rotary piston flow meter is a type of flow meter used in industrial and commercial applications. Rotary piston flow meters are used to measure small volumes of liquid, air, or other gases which can be injected into a pipeline through an orifice plate at one end, and then discharged at another. In simple terms, rotary pistons flow meter works on the principle that when there is a pressure drop across the orifice plate it causes the volume flow velocity to change in direction and increases momentum so as to overcome internal friction losses. The principle of changing direction is somewhat similar to that of the oil pump where the oil is under suction inside the cylinder while pressurized oil flows out by using pistons (rotary).

However, due to these tight fits, clean fluid must be used (or filters put in place) as a particle getting trapped can actually block flow. They operate by a piston moving within a chamber of known volume.
