These fishing waders arrived in good condition, but did have a rubber smell that required that I immediately put them outside to air out after I opened the package. After airing out for a couple of days, the smell decreased substantially, but did not go away. Even after using in water for my tests, the smell persisted. I have these stored for future use out in the garage. This rubber/chemical smell cost half a star. As for the waterproofing, I wore these in my swimming pool for my test. I started on the first stair, and waited for five minutes, then went down a stair, waited another five minutes, and then finally another five minutes on the third stair. Fifteen minutes total, last five of which were up to my hip. All dry, not a single drop of water leaked inside. The neoprene booties is the most likely source of the rubber smell, and they suffer for an additional issue, and that is the soles are too thin. Waders are used in rivers and beaches, typically, and both have sharp objects that can pierce these booties. You'll have to be very careful where you step, or do what I do, which is to get some Teva-style sandals, to wear over the booties. That will give me some armor and confidence I'm not going to poke a hole in them. I ordered an X-Large, because with waders, you never know what you're going to be wearing underneath. I'm glad I did, because the bootie size on the X-Large was a comfortable fit on my Size 10W foot size, wearing thick thermal socks. A Large wader would have been too tight, and you never want tight waders, because you may need to take them off in a hurry, and wet, tight waders, can be very difficult to get out of. Half a star off for lack of underfoot armor for the booties. The rest of the waders are done very well, and the chest pocket and right handed hook keeper are nice touches. If you are left handed, and hold your rod in your right hand, then you are out of luck with the hook keeper, as there is only a Velcro style patch on the left side, to put the pad, and it might get in your way. If only the manufacture were to address the booties, with their lack of hard bottom and rubber smell, then it would have been a five star item. As it is:
