Diamond Wheel Dressers - Best Kind?

If you do much off-hand grinding of high speed steel tool bits, you can rough them out fairly quickly by using a lantern type toolholder of the corresponding size of the toolbit to hold the toolbit so that you can rough it out to the general shape so that you don't burn your fingers. It doesn't make any difference if you overheat your toolbit (blue or even dull red) at this point. High speed steel has red hardness, so the hardness of the toolbit won't be affected.

When you use this technique, you should be able to rough out and finish a threading tool so that if matches your center gage within 10 minutes, using a 5/16 toolbit. A little longer if you are using a 1/2 toolbit.

If you are considering a new grinder, consider one with 8 inch wheels and rpm. Some 6 inch grinders are available with a speed adjustment that allows you to slow the wheel down. rpm is too fast and your wheel goes dull quicker.

When you use a grinding wheel this hard, it requires a lot of dressing to keep it's ideal shape. You not only want to remove the gouges and flatten the face of the wheel, but you want to keep the corners of the wheel sharp.

The best and quickest way to do this is to use a starwheel dresser. A good starwheel dresser has hardened star wheels to fracture the grains off the grinding wheel, and the star wheels should be separated by solid washer type hardened disks about every second star wheel. This solid washer type hardened disk keeps the star wheels from cutting too deeply into the grinding wheel.

After dressing the wheel, be sure to adjust your tool rest to within 1/16 inch of the face of the wheel. Most grinding accidents are caused by letting this gap get too wide, and the piece you are grinding gets sucked into the space between the tool rest and the face of the wheel.

If you buy this type of dresser, don't buy a narrow one. Spend a few bucks more and get a wider one. This is the quickest way to dress a aluminum oxide wheel for grinding HSS tools. With a little practice, you will be able to produce a completely adequate flat faced wheel. A freshly-dressed wheel removes metal more coolly and quickly. You don't need a diamond dresser for this purpose. Diamond dressers are appropriately used for dressing wheels on surface grinders.

When you are dressing a wheel using any dresser, it produces a lot of hazardous aluminum oxide dust. Use a 3-M or other face mask.
